Having made my first visit to a Japanese Onsen a few months ago, I found this article to be particularly timely. To be sure, it is a completely different set of ideals about public nudity, but one thing is quite a lot the same. Once you’ve been naked for about five minutes, it’s all pretty much business as usual.

  1. So true! I remember my first onsen visit like it was yesterday. After a minute or two of blind panic, more about potentially breaking one of the rules, I was deep in hot water and pretty much oblivious to everyone around me. Ten minutes later and I was in love with onsen culture. It’s the highlight of every return visit to Japan.
